Vegetarian cosmetics and skincare are those that contain no animal byproducts (except those where the animal has not died, such as dairy products). Sometimes they include honey too. They are often cruelty-free (neither the ingredients nor the finished product tested on animals in recent years).

Vegan cosmetics and skincare do not contain dairy or honey either. Again they are usually cruelty-free but in the case of cosmetics the number of brands available are very limited.

Real mineral makeup is suitable for vegans, and it is very easy to find nowadays on the net. Beware of mainstream brands that claim to be mineral makeup, they are often nothing of the sort. Mineral makeup foundation has just 4 or 5 ingredients (depending on whether you want a lot of shimmer or not). Also, as someone kindly emailed to point out, well known mineral makeup brands such as Jane Iredale can still contain ingredients unsuitable for vegans. My personal favourite has always been mineralpuremakeup.com who sell to customers worldwide. Much cheaper (one 30g tub lasts nearly 6 months) and better quality than copycat brands.

Mineral makeup is just pure colour with no filler. It is very pure and light, yet gives very good coverage. It’s ideal for using under the eyes as it doesn’t look cakey. The best way to apply mineral foundation is with a medium size blusher brush (although there are brushes called Kabuki which are supposed to be very good too but are often made of animal hair). Apply the mineral foundation all over the skin, then dip the edge of the brush in the foundation and concentrate it on the areas which need more coverage. Finish off by blending in everywhere. For dry skin mix with a little moisturiser first.

If in doubt, just go for mineral makeup. It suits everyone and looks superb. You can also get mineral lip colour and eyeshadow, so there’s no excuse!
